The Westin Convention Center Pittsburgh’s Environmental Policy

This Pittsburgh hotel is committed to protecting our environment and preserving precious natural resources. We believe being green is not a definitive objective but understand it’s a process of being “greener.” We are dedicated to the process and promise to promote a lifestyle that ensures our environmental impact on the world around us is minimal and as positive as possible.

We have integrated various methods of greener living into our daily operations and encourage our guests and team members to do the same. We reduce, reuse and recycle where possible. We support our vendors, neighbors, and local merchants and do our best to promote the good work they are doing throughout the community.

We are in the midst of great change and look to our customers, associates, and partners to help us navigate through this change and support us in our efforts.

Food and Beverage
• Implemented an eco-culinary program completely eliminating transfats from all food served
• Recycle cooking oil from our restaurants
• Incorporate super foods into menu offerings
• Maximize efficiency and reduce unneeded energy consumption in all of the hotel's kitchens
• Use of cloth napkins in banquets and restaurants

Greener Meetings Program
• 100% paper recycling
• Utilize Roselli silver tables which reduce the need for linens and skirting
• Reduction in plastic water bottle consumption (water stations in meeting space, by request)
• Electronic reader boards for all meeting rooms which eliminates all printed paper signs
• Provide clients with additional options to customize their meeting with green tactics that decrease the carbon footprint of the event


Energy Conservation
• Energy saver feature in guest rooms by using the room key to operate lighting and air flow once a guest enters the room
• Meeting room temperatures centrally controlled in accordance to meeting schedules
• Switch to CFL light bulbs
• Implemented company Six Sigma Energy Reduction Project to evaluate then reduce electrical usage


Water Conservation
• Encourage guests to reuse linens and towels when they stay consecutive nights
• Provide guest option to use only one showerhead from the dual heavenly shower head
• New energy efficient laundry machine that recycles 80% of the water utilized


Waste Reduction
• Associate newsletter is printed on 100% recycled paper
• Recycling program with Pittsburgh Recycling including cardboard, aluminum, metal, plastics and paper

Individual Staff Contributions
• Associates make an effort to print less paper and work more digitally
• Bring their own coffee mug or water container to reduce the usage of water bottles
• Turn computers and lights off when not in use
• Recycle all paper, cardboard, aluminum, and plastics
• Recycle batteries and cell phones
